“How To Cope With Suicidal Tendencies”, explains psychiatrist, Dr. Deepak Raheja

Feeling little depressed every now and then is basic human nature. You know you are part of the real world when you have different feelings for different situations. However, when you are sad and depressed on a constant basis and without any apparent reason, you should try talking it out to a close friend or family member.

Being an experienced psychiatrist at Hope Care, mental wellness centre, I have come across many people who are extremely depressed and experience suicidal tendency. With my holistic experience throughout my professional like, I would like to share few of my viewpoints here.

If you are suffering from depression, I want you all to know that you are not weak, crazy or a flawed person. If you feel suicidal, you need to understand that there is much to life and that you are strong enough to overcome your suicidal tendencies. Suicidal tendency only means that you are witnessing a phase, which you are finding difficult to cope with. This definitely does not mean that it is impossible to come out of that same phase.

People around you may or may not understand what you are going through. This is the reason they fail to understand how to help you. But, you are strong and you hold the strength to fight and get over your depressive thoughts. Below mentioned are few points that may help you to come out of suicidal tendencies.

  1. Try sharing your feelings with someone who you think can understand you. Sometimes opening up to a close friend or a family member can be of great help. They will definitely listen to your woes and try to help you as much as they can. Trust me, if you can express your feeling and fight hard, hope will come to you.
  2. Try engaging in some kind of creative art. Go for a vacation, trek, swim or get into some kind of sport – just avoid staying home alone and doing nothing. A creative activity always helps in changing an individual’s perspective and keeps the mind and heart happy.
  3. Do things that make you happy; adopt a pet, visit a dog park or indulge in gardening. This will help you calm down. Sometimes taking care of a pet or a plant induces a sense of responsibility that you would enjoy and brings back the lost hope.

If you still think you are lost and depressed, try talking to a professional therapist. At Hope Care, we are always open to hear out people’s troubles. I and my team of psychiatrists and therapists hold experience in helping people with depression and suicidal tendencies.
